DAY 20: Praise of the Holy Spirit

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. – John 14:26

In the final moments before Jesus departed from his disciples, he imparted the profound revelation that he would ascend to be reunited with the Father, who in turn would send forth a divine presence to serve as a source of guidance, empowerment, instruction, and unwavering support for their spiritual journey. This divine gift, the Holy Spirit, or the “Spirit of Truth,” remains ever-present among us today.

Father, I am deeply grateful for your constant presence in my life. I am thankful that I do not have to rely solely on my own abilities to lead a life that reflects the virtues of Jesus. You have blessed me with the gift of the Holy Spirit, bestowing upon me the power to live in godliness and walk in alignment with your will. I value the guidance and counsel of the Holy Spirit in my life. I pray that I may always seek His wisdom and understanding to navigate the complexities of life and make decisions that honor you. Thank you, Father, for the precious gift of the Holy Spirit, whose presence in my life is truly a remarkable blessing.

DAY 19: Nonprofit Agencies in our Community

So let us not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessings if we don’t give up. – Galatians 6:9

Serving others involves more than simply our actions; rather, it involves our hearts and attitudes towards each other while we are serving; it involves love. Once again, we can look to Jesus as an example for this. He did not serve begrudgingly but instead showed true humility and love while he helped people from diverse backgrounds and social standing.

Grant us wisdom to respond effectively to the needs of your people with grace and compassion. Give us the courage to speak your words of life, peace, love, mercy, and human solidarity. Bless the people whom we serve and strengthen the staff and volunteers who reach out to them every day. Amen.

DAY 18: Local Congregations and Unity Among Them

This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. – Ephesians 4:13

We give praise and honor to God for uniting us under one king. We thank Him for the opportunity to serve alongside our brothers and sisters. We acknowledge that we were all made in His image, and when the world sees the differences in race, traditions, speech, and culture, we do not see walls dividing us. Instead, we come together, bringing the best of each other, to honor our Father. We remain united under one faith, knowing that our battle is not against one another but against the ruler of this world. We stand boldly and claim our victory, for the battle has already been won. All the glory, praise, and honor belong to our Lord. In His name, we come together. In His name, we lift our city. In His name, we pray forevermore.

Heavenly Father, your sons and daughters come before you boldly on this day to lift our local congregations towards the promise of unity. We confidently ask for spiritual eyes to look at one another with the same love and adoration that you see us with. We willingly surrender the divisions created by this world to pull us apart. We humbly recognize that we are not meant to walk this path alone. We pray that you surround us with the right people to lead us towards your complete will for our lives. Father, we thank you in advance for what you are going to do in us during these 40 days, and we give you all the glory, honor, and praise. In Jesus name, amen.

DAY 17: Godly Men to Lead Youth

Holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. – Philippians 2:16

In ministry, youth leaders have one of the most important roles. Students benefit from them because they help establish a foundation of faith. We need the next generation of believers to lead the charge for Christ. There is a lot of pressure that comes with being a leader. Trying to figure out whether you’re doing the right thing, if your decisions are the right ones, and if you’re really making a difference in students’ lives. Pray for peace in their hearts and minds and that they will share the gospel with all students, inviting them into a relationship with Jesus. Pray for more future youth leaders, “for the fields are ready to be harvested.” Prayer for leaders who, like Jesus, are not afraid to communicate with anyone and love radically, and stepping out of society’s boundaries and norms to rescue students.

Father, we boldly ask in the name of Jesus that you would empower youth pastors across El Dorado and Union County and that their lives would be lived out in bold faith, bringing the gospel to every student they encounter. Allow them to feel at peace in their ministries as they draw near to you. It is my prayer that they will hold fast to the word of life and pursue Jesus with everything they have, while inviting others to do the same.

DAY 16: Those in Poverty

For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land. – Deuteronomy 15:11

God tells us that there won’t be poverty, then tells us what to do if there is poverty, then tells us that there will always be poverty! God is not contradicting Himself. He is pointing to the sad reality of our broken world and then telling us what to do about it.

God, thank you for the abundance of life, relationships, health, and comfort that you have provided, and thank you that even in times of need, despair, and brokenness, you are there. Please put your arms around children and families in extreme poverty so they feel comfort and hope; meet their needs both physically and spiritually. And, Lord, guide us so we can be your hands and feet pursuing justice for the poor and upholding the cause of the needy.

DAY 15: Local Business Owners

And work for the peace and prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, for its welfare will determine your welfare.  – Jeremiah 29:7

Local business owners certainly need the support of our community. The advertising of Amazon and other online stores has such an appeal to shoppers, but like one sign said, they won’t back our little leagues and local activities for us. It’s the local businesses that we ask for help, so in turn we should be buying their product. Like the scripture said, the welfare of the city determines our own welfare.

Heavenly Father, today we make an appeal on behalf of our local business owners. We pray for them to have witty inventions and ideas that will produce a market for our city and a great harvest for them. We pray that the enemies that rise up against them will be defeated and that you, Lord, send blessings on everything they put their hands to. Let their work be established and bring prosperity to them and our city these forty days of prayer and for their lifetime.

DAY 14: Military

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” – John 15:13

My father served faithfully during World War II in the U.S. Navy. He never spoke much about his experiences; however, I always felt he was proud of the time he spent in the navy. I remember one time he did say that he sometimes wished he had made a career of serving in the Navy. He never wanted to miss a war movie on TV, no matter what branch was being shown. Dad instilled in me a great appreciation for those servicing in all branches of the military. I still feel a sense of appreciation when I see a man or woman in a military uniform.

Great Commander and Chief of Heaven’s Armies, look down on those servicing in America’s military branches in your tender mercy and grace. Many of these men and women are serving in difficult places where they may be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice for this country, just as Your Son made the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Many who return home will carry both outward and inward scars of their time servicing this country; I pray for healing. While they are servicing in faraway places, their families are here praying for their loved one’s safe return. I ask, LORD, that you would bless their families as well. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

DAY 13: Praise of Christ

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.- Philippians 2:9-11

He is Lord! In an act of pure love and obedience, Jesus gave up his divine privileges and humbly became like us, taking on the consequences of sin for all humanity. Only in Him are we made righteous. Because of His love, we know love. Because of His goodness, we are good. Because He is enough, we are enough. In Jesus, nothing is missing, and nothing is lacking. Praise the Son of God, the perfect sacrifice, the redeemer of the world, our Savior, Jesus!

Our heavenly Father, we humbly bow and thank you for your Son, the Savior of the world. You have blessed us, through Jesus, with every spiritual blessing. We praise the Holy Name of Jesus, who has saved us from our sins and made us righteous in your sight. We praise the Lord for His loving kindness and excellent greatness that extends throughout the generations! Praise Him, who is worthy to receive all glory and honor. Praise to Jesus, our Lord! Amen.

DAY 12: Elderly and Those in Nursing Homes

Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding? – Job 12:12

Often, the elderly are not considered to be of great value. Those in care facilities can be overlooked and forgotten. Yet they are all still children of God, needing our love and compassion. And as the scripture tells us, the aged [elderly] have gained experience and wisdom that can enrich our own lives.

Gracious Lord, we thank you for the gift of the aged, and for the gifts of wisdom they possess. Enlarge our hearts to appreciate and acknowledge them with our time, our visits, our prayers.

DAY 11: Hospitals and Health Care Professionals

Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established. – Proverbs 16:3

Our healthcare workers are overworked, anxious, and sometimes tired, but many believe they are guided by God to care for their patients’ medical, physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. God can heal instantly, but He sometimes uses medical means such as surgery, therapy, and medications.

Our most gracious heavenly Father, we are thankful for the people who dedicate themselves to the field of healthcare. We ask you to guide their ways each day and give them wisdom in treating their patients. Please give them the strength they need when they tire and let them feel your presence in every decision they make. In Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
